Building Your Personal Brand Through Travel
I started marketing my study abroad experience before I even left.
My parents “needed some more convincing” before they allowed me to take my studies overseas for a semester. I created a PowerPoint and presented my findings on my laptop at our kitchen counter. I described each study abroad program option and the benefits of each, then summarized the marketable skills I’d gain from study abroad that I could express to potential employers.
This perspective resonated with my skeptical parents; how to approach study abroad from the perspective of marketing.
Why is marketing yourself important, you may ask? Well, it helps you develop confidence in your ability to make contributions to the business world. When you market yourself properly, you boast the skills and experience learned to be a productive member of the working world.
Marketing is not about bragging, despite the general public’s misconception. It’s about knowing yourself, your brand, and your audience to open your world to possibilities. Selling a product, creating a brand image, selling yourself, promoting a new event, and anything in between.
